The only backlinks that are helpful are ones that relate to your site. So for example, if you have a business consulting website and you have a backlink from other business related sites that is valuable. If you have 500 backlinks from MySpace that could hurt you.

Thank you for the rsponse and informations. But, I see people submitting to websites with high page ranks. I have also seen that one way back links are being submitted at a very high price.

I generally agree with the above comments but you also see sites doing well with backlinks that do not relate to their site

I agree with you capital domains. I've seen people with thousands of one way links that they have posted to different blogs that aren't relevant to their sites. But the one way links they have from the blog are in anchor text links for certain keywords which they rank highly for within Google.
