What are display ads?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but this has been vexing me lately and I can't seem to google up any kind of straight answer.

What exactly are "display ads"?

I've seen this phrase bandied about a lot of the webmaster newsletters and articles lately and I have no idea what it means.

Anybody?

P.S. My level of expertise with online advertising is that I've been an Adsense publisher for about three years.

The same Advertising Age article features this awesome observation from Augustine Fou, senior VP-digital lead at MRM Worldwide:

"...advertisers are starting to realize simply having hundreds of millions of impressions isn't that important if they're getting 0.002% click-through rates." Testify, Augustine!

We may eventually see one, big, useful ad instead of six blocks of poorly-targeted material. That'll be a good day on the Interweb.

Re: What are "display ads"?

Display ad campaigns can increase visits from search engines by nearly 14%, and can boost paid-search click-throughs by nearly 15%, according to a recent study by iCrossing, which reported that display campaigns also aid brand awareness, recognition and preference by attracting visitors to a website.

The report based on the study, “The Effects of Display Media on Search Traffic,” was written in response to what iCrossing perceived as a lack of awareness in the digital marketing industry as to the impact of display media on other digital channels. As part of the report, iCrossing analyzed data from before, during and after display ad campaigns ran for one of its global travel clients.

I think that would be nice.
