osCommerce customization

In the global network you can find many services to create your store. This may be individual design or template.

The best shopping carts to use for small businesses are:

1. MivaMerchant - This cart is for the slightly more advanced user and can be customized to compete with even the most advanced ecommerce stores. Novice users will want to stay away from this cart unless they have a budget to hire someone (like us) to go in and customize the look and feel.

2. osCommerce - This cart has an OK look and feel out of the box and is can also be customized howerver customizing this cart will require a decent handle on PHP. But you don't need to customize it at all to make it work and places like templatemonster sell great looking templates you can use for it that can help you out a lot.

That's about it actually. I don't use anything else because no other cart out there is customizable enough. We build ecommerce storefronts from scratch (mostly programmed in ColdFusion) and also customize MivaMerchant systems. Nothing else in this post holds a candle to the 2 above.

Thing about shopping carts is that they are best regarded as basic platforms to build from - then customise as required.

Some good advice here:

Re: Which shopping cart do you use?

I use Shopify. I chose it because of the ease of set up. A big plus was that I did not need to worry about hosting my site as Shopify is a hosted solution.

Re: Which shopping cart do you use?

Took a quick look around shopping cart (non-hosted) solutions and found out that Magento seems to be the top solution around right now. Put down my findings in this blog post - http://blog.anafore.com/2010/11/18/analyzing-standalone-shopping-cart-solutions/

I also played around with Magento to see what the fuss was about. Set up an instance for it and got it up and running. Getting a basic store up took me a while to figure out but once you do it is pretty easy. And while the admin panel is complex, the flexibility of the solution is pretty decent. So if you have to choose a non-hosted solution, I'd think Magento is the way to go!
