SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer.
Secure Socket Layer protocol was created by Netscape to ensure secure transactions between web servers and browsers. The protocol uses a third party, a Certification Authority (CA), to identify one end or both ends of transactions.

In short, SSL is a protected data or information to your website users. Like if you have an e-commerce website, then you need a security certificate for your website to make sure your users, their information confidential.

SSL means Secure Socket Layer protocol.It is developed by Netscape. Transactions between web browser and server should be secure, so that use SSL certificate is used. Certification Authorities is allow certificate for validation and trust. SSL certificate is using cryptography system. Where public key and private key is used. A certificate is insecure until it is not sign.
A browser uses http protocol for secure page.
