If adsense sites have to pay for advertising on keywords that they are promoting I just dont see how they can make that much money - am I missing something?

Every ad site I saw being sold was not making a lot of money

I agree it does not look like a lot of them make money and if they do it is not that much - the problem is that we all pay for it in higher advertising costs. I do not believe it is a sustainable model and the search engines will soon catch on to this because the sites add no value.
