5 Things to Look For When Hiring a Social Media Expert

Here’s a list of characteristics you should look for in a Social Media Expert -

The Big Three
At the very least, the person you are interviewing should have accounts on the “big three” social networking sights: Facebook, Linkedin, and Twitter. Not only should they have accounts on each of these sites, but they should be active participants in all three.

Participation
Look to see what kinds of posts your candidate is leaving on the three different networks. Are they contributing valuable information, or just regurgitating the same content everyone else is?

Other social media websites
While the big three is most important, a real expert would be well versed in many more social media platforms. Even if you do not know much about these other sites, you can still ask your candidate how aware they are of them, and then ask them to tell you a little bit about how they would use these sites to promote your business.

Blogging
Does the person have a blog? Does the person post regularly at least twice a week on their blog and make useful, valid, and informative comments on other blogs? What is their overall tone and how do they come across from their online posts?

Ask questions
Although this may sound as though it’s teetering on the brink of obvious, ask them what they know about social media other than the top three social networking sites. Probe them a little bit and see if they can provide you with any valuable insights that they didn’t just get from another blog post.

Re: 5 Things to Look For When Hiring a Social Media Expert

I am not sure a blog is really a requirement for being a social media expert. I know lots of people heavily involved in social media that would never maintain a blog and yet they are still the best at what they do. Also a lot of people / businesses are not really looking for social media experts but are looking for experts in other fields that can apply their knowledge to social media. These are skills like programming, design, writing, research, administration, SEO etc. Most social media sites are very straight forward and easy to use so becoming an expert user of the sites mentioned takes all of about a few hours to learn. Most business also already have a clear idea of what they want from there social media campaigns and it is really just a matter of execution.

Re: 5 Things to Look For When Hiring a Social Media Expert

# A person having at least two to three years of experience in social media is favorable.
# Their knowledge on social media should not be limited only to blogging, twitter and Facebook. They should have proper in-depth knowledge on the subject.
# Make sure that their past work on social sites contains messages which are not only interesting but also give the targeted audience an incentive to pass it on to others.
# The “followers” should be relevant people to the concerned niche and not just the results of auto-follow. Having distinguished followers on twitter and their blog is always a perk but not a necessity.
# They should be able to help your SEO by building relationships in the social world and soon turn them into links.
# They should be active on social sites every day.

Re: 5 Things to Look For When Hiring a Social Media Expert

I am also very tired of hearing about how "experts" are all slick talking marketers - I have intense experience in Social Media and try my best to keep up on the practices of marketing on Social Media. I too wrote a blog about experts and marketing. Please take a look, I will be posting your blog to my Social Media Accounts today for sure!! (www.facebook.com/synchronoussoft)

Re: 5 Things to Look For When Hiring a Social Media Expert

Well, if it is possible, you should also contact the past or current employer of that social media expert and ask on how he has contributed to the growth of the website and on how he helped increased the revenue. no point of hiring someone who can't make your revenues higher.
