What Are the Warning Signs of Workplace Violence?

Hi

While people are sometimes surprised when workplace violence erupts, the fact is there are often a number of warnings signs indicating some type of physical or emotional disturbance is in the making. Often, the signs are subtle at first and may seem isolated. However, as the situation worsens, the signs will become more obvious and must be dealt with quickly in order to avert an outburst of violence in the workplace.

One of the earliest signs that someone is on the road to creating workplace violence is a noticeable change in behavior and temperament. Someone who is normally courteous and looks people in the eye during conversations begins to withdraw, speaks only when spoken to, and offers only short responses when asked a direct question. The individual also rarely if ever looks directly at others during a conversation.

Thanks

The Warning Signs of Workplace Violence is unreasonable responses. If the employee has irrational or violent reactions to work assignments or management questions, then managers should report the person to human resources immediately. This kind of employee is constantly making negative comments about other employees, tends to overreact to statements from management, refuses to accept criticism from anyone and is extremely difficult to talk to under almost any circumstances.

Re: What Are the Warning Signs of Workplace Violence?

Workplace violence can be the result of an employee being pushed to the breaking point in his personal life, and he could potentially decide to take it out on his workplace, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Pay close attention to employees who regularly mention hardships in their personal life and seem desperate for a solution. Among the warning signs are that these employees might repeatedly make drastic remarks about their home life, such as the need to steal to pay debts, or the need to remove a family member from their home. There could also be the constant mention of suicide by the desperate employee as well. Fellow employees should report this to their supervisors, and management should report an employee like this to human resources, so that the department can try to get the employee the help he needs to avoid harming anyone at work or elsewhere.

Re: What Are the Warning Signs of Workplace Violence?

Employee workshops and education are critical, long before a situation like this ever arises. Employees often shun someone who is acting odd, or even make fun of them, which just makes a bad situation worse. It's critical that someone with these sort of tendencies get help because termination of employment is often a triggering event for violence.

Another workplace violence situation that cannot be overlooked is violence from outside - often from a jilted husband or boyfriend. Although this is directed at a specific employee at first, others have often been caught in the line of fire. If you have an employee who is going through a bad break up or a domestic violence problem, you need to be aware that this can often come with them to work. Listen for your employees problems, especially watch for situations involving restraining orders.
