In some industries, like consulting and professional services most companies are chosen solely on the recommendation of a friend.

I wouldn't say its the best form of marketing, since their are many different factors that come into play with each marketing campaign that you launch. However it is a system that works well, is simple to implement, and cost effective for small businesses, making it a fantastic marketing option.
