I think Breadcrumb navigation is best option. Trough breadcrumb visitor can move away back.

Navigation is not FOR the search engines but FOR the visitors. you can however have a better value in search engines if you fix your internal linking right (but it is not ONLY about navigation). one of the simplest way to have a good navigation is to have a good Main Nav Bar - yes, you can add in all of the SEO values in it but make sure that you consider the 3 click rule for your users. in 3 clicks or less, they should be able to get to the page that they need or the page that they would want to want.

Textual navigation is the best option for user as well as for search engine.

Ideally pure CSS text navigation is best for SEO, it is easy to index by search engine and reduce bandwidth usage compare to images navigation.

Next, never put the navigation as home and contact us, as million of sites have home and contact us keywords. Ideally rename home as your site, contact us as contact specialist or contact consultant.

According to my point of view Breadcrumb navigation is better for both use and SEO.
