Yes, Social Media Networking sites are promoting your businesses. Now a days, most of users are spent their time in Facebook, Twitter and Myspace like other social networking sites. That more helpful for getting visitors and traffic to your website. But my opinion is the Facebook is one of the best method for promote your business.

I would definitely use NO social network in promoting my brand or business. I would use some of them as contact point or query points for my site though. I'd use facebook, twitter and linkedin so people can find it easily but I wouldn't use them for promotion purposes. I'd let them come to me in those places.
