It is used with an image, which represents an image as text if the browser doesn't able to show images to the user. An SEO point of view it is a place where you can put your keyword (if it gives some meaning to an image) and if you are using an image as a link then ALT tag use as anchor text. It's optimization very important and useful for website.

Completely disagree... An SEO point of view for the "alt" tag is a great way or it is one of the means on how you can describe your image. SEO is NOT always about keywords and links guys. below is a sample of a code:

It depends on how the search engine interprets the users search terms so that it can return relevant/accurate results. Regarding reading of special characters, is pretty standard and can be crawled.

In general search engine can't read images and if one should put description of image that which kind of image on that particular place. So search engine should be aware about that.
