here are some of my observation people have a mistake on (my opinion as well)
1. some don't read rules and regulations - they just enter, create accounts, and fire away
2. some looks at those site as a way to sell products and service - even though we can make sales through them, they are NOT designed as a marketing platform
3. some just makes them for the sake of having profiles and just fires away - minding what you post can really affect your business

I agree, social media marketing is just like any other marketing campaign. You must develop a plan before you get started and know the image and message you wish to get to your customers. The danger probably lies in the very relaxed nature of social media. Perhaps that lends to people making mistakes like you mentioned, "tweeting too many personal tweets". It's a fine line to walk between openly communicating with your customers in a more relaxed environment and being unbusinesslike which turns customers away.
