Thank you for your post. I agree wholeheartedly that a good first step to improving a website is with quality content. I'd add the word original in there, too, because rehashing content, using paraphrased content from other websites or just spitting out mindless pages is a good way to get clobbered by the search engines. (Study Google' Panda update, if anyone has questions about that.)

A lot of people think that if their site looks fancy, or if they put up a bunch of blinky graphics or flash animations that people will be wowed and will descend upon their site in droves. Truth is, the look and feel of one's site is junior to the content.

Content is what search engines use to determine relevance and to serve one's site up in search results. The person with the best page for that keyword wins the top spots. And, unlike what some people proclaim, it's not all about links.

It's about quality. And keeping it real and giving your visitors what they want and need.
