Is Viral A Catch 22?

From what I have been reading, it seems that viral marketing is a great and inexpensive way to promote your website. However, it also seems that you can get into trouble for spamming...therefore it's a bit of a catch 22. So, I'm wondering if I can send an e-mail to my freinds and family with a short article/story/content about my niche/site (not a direct sales pitch) and include a link to my site and add a P.S. at the end of the e-mail to "please foward this to your friends"?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Regards

Creative viral marketing is sometimes effective. You have probably seen some short video clips for example that at the end advertise the company. However for the most part these tend to be expensive. Other types of viral marketing ie sending out mass emails without the recipient opting in can get you into trouble - there is specific legistlation prohibiting it.

With the time you would use trying to viral marketing I would suggest you:

-write articles and submit them to directories
-post on forums like this one
-perhaps consider writing a blog

All of these would be more effective

Spamming is a big concern you may find the by sending out the email and people perhaps viewing it as spam it may have the opposite affect that you want.

Honestly I do not think even family members would forward on the email unless it was funny or had some real interesting comments for the same reason why people dont forward or refer people when asked to do so.

I agree how many chain letters for example do you receive from your friends online that you never pass on
