How do you get a domain name that someone has?

We have our eye on a domain name but it is currently owned by someone else - how do you approach the person about the domain they currently do not have a website and it is due to expire at the end of the month.

You could wait until it expires on sites like Deleted Domain Names and there are other sites that automatically put your name in an auction for the name but then you are bidding on it with other people and the minimum cost is typically $60. Finally you could just approach them but expect to pay more.

I prefer this approach because many times a domain holder does not know the value of their domain and you can often pay them many times more than what they paid for it i.e. buy for $10 ask them to sell it for $60 if they have no future use for it - why not!

I agree with most of these comments but to put it simply - If you have deep pockets and the name is critical to you - approach them. If not try to get them at private auctions - if you have some money and they are fairly important to you - if you dont have much money and it is not that important wait until they drop

Re: How do you get a domain name that someone has?

Many domain names that are for sale will have a page that states it is available for purchase. If this is the case, contact the owner to see how much they are asking for the domain.

If there's no page at all, it's possible the owner plans to use it in the future, or maybe he or she is just hanging on to it. Either way, you may be able to convince them to sell. Many owners will consider this if the price is right. You can find the contact information for any domain by performing a Whois search at the InterNIC Web site or through most domain name registrars.

If a site does load, don't lose hope yet. You can still contact the owner and see if they're willing to part with it. Be prepared to pay more, however, in this instance.

If you pursue any of these options, you can expect to pay anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to possibly thousands per domain The market sets the price, according to the popularity of the domain name and its keyword potential.

I always just send the owner an email asking if he wants to sell.

Re: How do you get a domain name that someone has?

I tried to buy my domain name, which I had previously registered for 2 years, after it went into redemption. The name is my own and also the name of my photography business. Someone happened to buy it the exact day it became public. The thing is, the name being my own (and a very uncommon name, I am the only result on google) it is impossible that someone bought it for their own use or because they happened to share my name.

Is it illegal for them to steal my name this way? Is it possible to get the domain name back from them without having to pay them any money? Is it considered as cyber squatting?

Hi Cana2020,

Is it illegal for them to steal my name this way?

Technically, they did not steal your name, the registration expired and the name was available to the public.

Is it possible to get the domain name back from them without having to pay them any money?

Its their property now, until the registration expires, then you might have a chance to obtain it if they do not renew it.

Is it considered as cyber squatting?

Cyber Squatting is a term that refers to someone registering a name that is a trade marked brand, if someone holds the domain name of a brand that is owned by a company, that is considered Cyber Squatting.

There are lots of key words, or general words registered and because its taken does not mean that its Cyber Squatting.

You do have grounds to get your domain back if your business name was also a registered trade mark.

Auto Renew:
Many Domain Registrars offer a feature called "Auto Renew" and when the annual few is due it will auto renew to your credit card. This could assist in this head ache occurring again.

I use this domain register

Alternate Solution:
There is a new domain type released a couple of months ago called .CO - you may find your name in the www.yourname.co for $23 as a cheaper solution to your problem.

Search for it at the domain register

Whois Guard:
The domain register above offers 1 year free Whois Guard valued at $8 - when activated this protects your privacy and replaces your name, address, phone with the contact details from the Whois office and people contact Whois to get in touch with you - alternatively use a 'Post Office Box' instead of your home address.

Hire an Agent to Buy the Domain
Employ the services of a professional to find the owner of the domain and negotiate the deal, they charge a $70 flat fee of + [10% Commission ($60 minimum) if your Agent successfully negotiates the deal]. Domain Buying Agent - if this field in new to you then I'd suggest hiring an Agent to do it for you, so you can focus on your business. Its not worth the time to learn it to only do it once.

Escrow Service:
Use an Escrow Service from the Agent above or an alternate service to ensure that the transaction occurs smoothly, this will ensure that when you pay over the money the Escrow service holds it until you get the Domain name. The reason for using this it the seller could be on the other side of the world and you have no means to chase them up if they do not follow through with the transaction.
