Employment Law and the rights

Employment Law and the rights and obligations conferred through an employment relationship are regarded as a minefield for employers and bewildering for employees. Generally, professional advice and the information resources available to employers and employees do little to dispel this feeling. Employment law solicitors and employment law advisors are usually polarised in their approach, acting always either for the employer or for the employee. As a consequence their respective views and approach to employment law issues can become entrenched depending upon which party they are accustomed to act for. For this reason it is always better, albeit more difficult, to retain an advisor with experience of acting for a variety of clients, from PLC's and multinationals through to SMEs, owner managed businesses, senior executives and multiple party or single party employee claims. Only this level of experience can guarantee a truly balanced and ultimately more valuable level of service and advice

Re: Employment Law and the rights

Employment Related Law aims to protect employees from unfair practices and make staff and employers clear about their rights and responsibilities – and that remains a priority. But when regulation becomes over complicated and restrictive it can have the opposite effect and make it difficult for business to create new jobs.

Re: Employment Law and the rights

An employee has the right to know how much they will be paid and how often. They are also entitled to receive an individual, detailed written pay statement from their employer, either when they are paid or shortly before.

When and how you should be paid

When you start work your employer should tell you:

the day or date when you'll be paid - for example, each Friday, or the last working day of the month
how you will be paid, for example in cash, by cheque or directly to your bank

If you are an employee, you must be given a document which tells you how much you'll be paid, and at what intervals, within two months of starting work. This is normally contained in your contract of employment.
