Yes it is very useful when duplicate content issues raise within your website's pages.

Some of the reasons on why I use this tag are:
1. to tell the search engines which URL I'm using for the page (yes even with the redirect of pages like home.com to www.home.com)
2. to tell search engines that when I redirect a page, the canonical tag is the new page for it
