Re: The rules in my small business

The first thing you need to do is call a meeting and lay down the ground rules. You can explain that the business is shifting gears somewhat and new rules are going to be implemented. You should be honest about how some people are taking advantage of certain things and this has to stop. Outline what they can expect from you as their leader and what you expect of them being part of the team. Also be sure to promote an open communication.

Re: The rules in my small business

This is one of the problems with employing friends or family to start your small business. Firstly, it can be difficult disciplining them because they believe that you are all equal, secondly it can be very difficult if it ever gets to the stage that you need to fire them when it doesn't work out.

My advice would be to put together your list of office rules and then be consistent in the way you administer them.

Re: The rules in my small business

One of the good things in getting a business grow with your friends or relatives is that it is always going to be easy to communicate with them. One of the things that you can do for the rules and the changes you need to make is to ask your long time employees about them (but it doesn't necessarily mean that you'll do it) as they are the ones who sees things that you miss.

Re: The rules in my small business

As businesses grow there is an increased need for processes/procedures and yes even rules. So the first thing to do is determine what you need in terms of procedures and rules and the consequences if they are broken. Do you need something around starting times, communication, expectations...what do you want in place. One of the challenges of having a business with family or friends is often they expect different rules for them than others. And they "assume" you understand if they come in late for instance. Once you have determined what you want in place it's time to call a meeting and discuss this. Open, honest communication is the most important thing. You might need to have 1-1 meetings with some individuals depending on their relationship to you. At the end of the day you must decide the consequences if they don't follow the new rules. Without teeth having a conversation is somewhat meaningless.

Re: The rules in my small business

Firstly, you need to develop our new ground rules for your company. Then to assign authority and responsibilty to each employees working in your company for successfully achieving your goals.

Re: The rules in my small business

These are common scenario in family businesses or with close friends. Many problems arise due to "over familiarity" with each other
or sometimes roles are not properly identified - the downside of this are problems arising and unresolved issues which may result to poor performance of the business itself.

I suggest you draft a clear organizational structure of your business. Even if it's a very small business, the role of each person should be clearly defined to each other. This way, everyone will have a clear view of what to expect from the other and the person himself will have a clear direction of what is expected of him and what he should accomplish.

It is also very important that you define the person whom they are directly accountable with. For example, if you have assigned a supervisor then the people that will be working under the supervision of this person should clearly know that they should directly report to their supervisor and that the supervisor has the right to demand results from them.

Every business, whether big or small should have a structure and this should be clearly defined and discussed to everyone. You may post the "organizational chart" in the area where everyone can see it. Your close friends that are part of the company will also see the clearly what their roles are and that you are their head.

Another thing is, act as a leader and manager (if that's the case). Be firm in implementing rules in the company yet be open-minded in receiving suggestions from your subordinates. Lead them to teamwork and to have respect with each other as this will be one of the main key in having a successful biz.

Good luck to you 🙂

Re: The rules in my small business

This is an excellent time to accomplish two short term goals at once:

1. Develop a strongly communicating community within your growing company

2. Develop a Policies and Procedures Manual that everyone supports

To accomplish this, produce an outline of what you want to have clearly agreed upon for each area of your business. Then ask you employees to submit their ideas and observations for any or all of the subjects in your outline. Then hold a roundtable of the key employees to agree upon the articles of the policies and procedures.

Getting input from all employees gets them invested in the process and will be more willing to abide by the articles that they helped construct. consider offering a generic version of your policies and procedures manual as downloadable PDF for the rest of your industry. Establish yourself as an authority on managed and profitable growth

Pay keen attention to the discussion that takes place n the roundtable be it one meeting or several. the ideas and the mindset of the key workers and how you perceive them will determine the life track of your business in the near future.

Finally, I personally wish you immense success in the growth of your business.

Re: The rules in my small business

Maybe that is problem every small business that grows will face.
When you get bigger, the manage problem coming out. I think when you have 10+ stuff in your company you should build a rule for your company. Within which some of the most important things you should consider: how to evaluate the result of stuff's work, how to encourage them, how to balance the work and life for your employees. I suggest you begin with the most troublesome problem that stop you from further developing right now.
Good luck!

Re: The rules in my small business

To run a business efficiently the employer needs to be strict and should cut the salary if any flaws are found on the employee's part. Incentives and rewards should be given according to the amount of work put up by the employee.
