I have been having problems getting timely payment from one of my clients and of course this is a sensative topic and has to be handled appropriately - how have you handled this in the past?

Have you tried taking them to court?

No it has not gotten to that stage - we would like to have them as a future client. I just think it is their CFO who has not been a big fan of our firm who is just slowing down the process

I would call the "business person" you have dealt with as your main contact and explain the situation they are probably not aware of the delay in payments and will be embarrassed by it. We had a similar situation happen to us and the client sent us out a check the next day when we brought the issue to the attention of the business contact.

This is typically how we handle it and it works out fine for us.
