Project Implementation

How do you tie back your projects to the business plan? We sometimes have a disconnect and we find ourselves working on a project that is not part of the strategic plan - any help would be great

Re: Project Implementation

In all of our project approval sheets we require a link back to the strategic plan if there is not one it has to be approved by the CEO

Re: Project Implementation

Other than for emergency or maintenance projects all of our projects must fall into the four strategic priorities we have set for the firm.

If I find myself wanting to do what you've described, that means that I must take something off my current plan to add this "new" thing. If I look at my plan and don't want to remove something, I don't do the new thing.

I don't know what sort of plan your company has, but I would question your companies planning process if this type of thing occurs. Seems like it's possible that the owner isn't buying into the plan or just had the plan created because they thought that the needed it. And while IMO, all businesses need a plan, if they don't follow it, it's worthless.

Your strategies always relate/are linked to your objectives. Your objectives relate to your vision.

If that's not happening, have them contact me 🙂 The planning process I use has that happen to the "t". Doesn't mean that your plan can't change... but you can't just keep adding things to it; w/o removing things.

Re: Project Implementation

Typically Informatics Implementation Projects involve the implementation of a vendor software product,
a software release. a system enhancement, or an in-house developed software product. Usually, one or
more user departments are involved as well as vendor representatives, Informatics staff, and external consultants.

Re: Project Implementation

"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." This quote from Henry Ford was used by a proud dad at a recent wedding I attended. It was a well chosen piece of advice, but as the managing director of a business solutions provider the quote hit a familiar note with me because it sums up exactly what we have been telling our clients during the implementation process.

In an increasingly fast paced world, clients want implementation to be quicker and less intrusive. It's a tough thing to achieve because implementing a business solution is not a straightforward process, and there are certainly no quick fixes.

Re: Project Implementation

Hello Friends.......

Effective Project Charters Tie Back to Strategy

You are new to a project. The project itself is new, or perhaps you have been handed an initial project. The Project Charter is the place to start to get yourself oriented to where the project fits into the organization.

Project Charters are supposed to explain at a high level where the project fits into the organization, and what problem or problems it is supposed to solve. The Project Charter is supposed to articulate the reason the project exists and is being undertaken. It should provide at the most a few guiding principles or goals that support this reason for existence, and everything else should be derived from that. This is the business purpose, or the business case, for the project.

Thanks

Re: Project Implementation

Hello
Let’s look at the major steps associated with implementation. Note that many of these activities need to be completed ahead of time. You cannot start planning for implementation while you are actually implementing.

1. Prepare the infrastructure. Many solutions are implemented into a production environment that is separate and distinct from where the solution was developed and tested. It is important that the characteristics of the production environment be accounted for. This strategy includes a review of hardware, software, communications, etc. In our example above, the potential desktop capacity problem would have been revealed if we had done an evaluation of the production environment. When you are ready for implementation, the production infrastructure needs to be in place.
2. Coordinate with the organizations involved in implementation. This may be as simple as communicating to your client community. However, few solutions today can be implemented without involving a number of organizations. For IT solutions, there are usually one or more operations and infrastructure groups that need to be communicated to ahead of time. Many of these groups might actually have a role in getting the solution successfully deployed. Part of the implementation work is to coordinate the work of any other groups that have a role to play. In some cases, developers simply failed to plan ahead and make sure the infrastructure groups were prepared to support the implementation. As a result, the infrastructure groups were forced to drop everything to make the implementation a success.
3. Implement training. Many solutions require users to attend training or more informal coaching sessions. This type of training could be completed in advance, but the further out the training is held, the less information will be retained when implementation rolls around. Training that takes place close to the time of implementation should be made part of the actual implementation plan.
