public vs private transport

In the era when long distance trips took several days, sleeping accommodations were an essential part of transportation. Today, most airlines, inter-city trains and coaches offer reclining seats and many provide pillows and blankets for overnight travelers. Better sleeping arrangements are commonly offered for a premium fare and include sleeping cars on overnight trains, larger private cabins on ships and airplane seats that convert into beds. Budget-conscious tourists sometimes plan their trips using overnight train or bus trips in lieu of paying for a hotel. The ability to get additional sleep on the way to work is attractive to many commuters using public transport.Because night trains or coaches can be cheaper than motels, homeless use these for a shelter during night.

Most transportation agencies actively discourage this. For this and other reasons passengers are often required to exit the vehicle at the end of the line; they can board again in the same or another vehicle, after some waiting. Also, even a low fare often deters the poorest individuals, including homeless people.

So what do you feel about the topic one should prefer to use public transport or private transport.

I wasn't aware the UK had a public transport network?... Didn't we sell it all off years ago? 😉

Re: public vs private transport

If you want to do your bit for the environment, getting public transport and leaving the car at home is one of the most straightforward things to do. As you will see below, it can be more convenient, quicker, and cheaper to do so. And the green benefits are great too. Car journeys contribute a significant amount of our overall carbon footprint. According to the Energy Saving Trust nearly half of us use a car to drive short journeys, journeys that could otherwise be completed in another, more sustainable way.

Re: public vs private transport

Hi guys

For the last few decades, air pollution has become an increasingly evident problem. Many of the pollutants in the air such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons are produced by automobiles. The Department of Health, Education and Welfare has estimated that automobiles account for approximately 48% of the carbon monoxide, 32% of the nitrogen oxides, and 59% of the hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. These pollutants have an adverse effect on the environment and on humans. A mass transit system is more beneficial to the environment because it reduces the amount of pollution released into the air by providing an alternative to private transport that can be used by many. Mass transit systems are also more energy efficient modes of transportation than automobiles.

Carbon monoxide is a chemical compound of carbon and oxygen. It contributes to the greenhouse effect and causes health problems. In high concentrations, it tends to replace the oxygen in the bloodstream, which reduces the delivery of oxygen to body tissues. This impairs perception and thinking, slowing reflexes and causing drowsiness. Prolonged exposure to large quantities can cause unconsciousness and death. It may also impair the nervous system or heart function. Carbon monoxide is also a pollutant that contributes to the formation of smog. Each car gives off an average of approximately two-thirds of a ton of carbon monoxide per year.

Automobiles are one of the largest sources of man-made carbon dioxide. Burning just a single tank of gasoline produces 300-400 pounds of carbon dioxide. It is also the main greenhouse gas. Too much of it may cause temperatures to rise, as it is a gas that tends to trap heat in the atmosphere. It is responsible for approximately 49% of global warming.

Nitrogen oxides are gases composed of nitrogen and oxygen. They contribute to the greenhouse effect as well as to the formation of smog. When they combine with water, nitric acid (a component of acid rain) is formed. Nitrogen oxides are the second major source of acidifying compounds in acid rain, next to oxides of sulfur. Nitrogen oxides are toxic to vegetation. They can also increase susceptibility to viral infections such as influenza. In addition, they may irritate the lungs and cause bronchitis.

Thanks

Re: public vs private transport

Public transport is a shared passenger transportation service which are available for use by the general public.Whereas private transport is transport in one's own vehicle or through self-power.
Private transport differs from public in that it lacks timetables and fixed itineraries. It also tends to be more convenient to the commuter as it is readily available on demand.

Re: public vs private transport

Hello
Most of us know using public transport is better for the environment and can even offer a cheaper and quicker route. But in reality the number of cars on the road is continuing to rise. So what is it that’s stopping people from ditching the more expensive not to mention less green, private forms of transport that we see on the road? We look at the pros and cons of both forms of getting from A to B…

Public Transport – A Greener Form of Travel
If you want to do your bit for the environment, getting public transport and leaving the car at home is one of the most straightforward things to do. As you will see below, it can be more convenient, quicker, and cheaper to do so. And the green benefits are great too. Car journeys contribute a significant amount of our overall carbon footprint. Convenient
The great thing about public transport is that it gets you where you want to be, when you want to be there, particularly in cities and towns. Rather than only being able to drive to a certain point before getting stuck in a one way system, you can reach your central point directly. Plus you get the bonus of sitting back, relaxing with a newspaper and letting someone else do the driving.

Re: public vs private transport

Hello friends

Public transport (also public transportation, public transit, or mass transit) is a shared passenger transportation service which are available for use by the general public, as distinct from modes such as Taxicab, car pooling which are not shared by strangers without private arrangement.
Public transport modes include buses, ferries, trams and trains and 'rapid transit' (metro/subways/undergrounds etc). Intercity public transport is dominated by airlines, coaches, and intercity rail. High-speed rail networks are being developed in a many parts of the world.

lol I love your reply here to Captain Obvious. 😀

But yeah didn't the UK sell off the public transport system at least partly? I mean Branson owns the Virgin train network in the UK right?

Re: public vs private transport

If a person want to go a trip,he used to wait for a vehicle which is sharable for all people in a regular and time to time basis. This is called public transportation and drivers hired in these vehicles are well-trained and experienced in driving skills. For a private transportation,it would be available on our demand and doesn't follow time schedule. Here, the drivers mightn't be trained properly and make them as a driver to run their services privately without anyone's objection.

Good information! However, most of the people are tired to make a journey with little comforts.Even a public sector is providing lot of availabilities in transport, some people feel uncomfort like seating problem, accomodating problem so on.,.With respect to all the transportation, hiring a cab is good with all comforts, convenience and has the advantage of going anywhere and anyspot with good trained and experienced driver.
