Credit Card processors making me crazy

I need at least one concrete referral. I've had 5 different merchant service providers over the last 12 years or so, and they've all ripped me off in one way or another. And their justification is always "didn't you see the letter we sent you?", or "it's right there in the fine print of that 22 page contract you signed 2 years ago. Can't believe you didn't notice that!" My current provider got my business, because my previous provider doubled my monthly fees all of a sudden. That's a sure way to get me to jump ship. But my current provider has just done something crazy as well.

I'm a low volume credit card merchant (mostly cash), so my monthly statement is usually around $60 to the processor. This month, it was suddenly well over $200. I assumed I had a chargeback, so I called them. They told me I was "out of compliance" with some security protocol, and I had been out of compliance for a year. That's why they've apparently been charging me a $25 monthly penalty all that time (which I never noticed). "We sent you a letter about it", they say. And the additional fee that pushed me over $200 was a surprise annual charge to cover the security issue, as well. All I ever get from them are statements which are written in greek. I log onto their website several times a month to check records, so it would have been nice to see a notification there that I was out of compliance, but I guess they'd rather let me charge customers insecurely, as long as they can quietly rip me off 25 bucks at a time.

That said, I'm dumping them. Please someone recommend a processor for a physical store (not online). I want a company that does not charge annual fees (monthly fees are fine), has discount rates that are not terribly high, and does not require a contract. I've come to believe that contracts are the first indicator that they already know they're going to p*ss you off at some point. I don't need advice on how to do my own research, and I don't need preachy "you should read every letter of every notice you get" advice. I just want to hear from those of you who have found a credit card processor that you love.

Thanks so much.

I have to say that it's really telling that there isn't a single recommendation for a credit card processor that doesn't rip off their clients. An ethical credit card processor with no hidden fees would make a fortune in this era, would they not?

Re: Credit Card processors making me crazy

I don't do credit card processing myself, my Affiliates do that for me.
That's one of the many advantages of doing Online Sales and doing Affiliate Marketing.
