What are the differences in qualities/skills that make up a good sales person versus marketing person?

I agree a good marketing person needs to be able to drag the horse to the trough and the good sales person needs to get the horse to drink even if they do not want to:)

The salesperson is central to the success of many organisations, yet job turnover in this role is reported as being excessive. Recruitment of these key individuals must be given a high priority, and practice should be as effective as is practical. This research examines the extent to which the job advertisement may be a contributory factor to this problem, by examining what recruiters say that they look for in today's salesperson and evaluating the potential effectiveness of advertisements placed in the printed media in the United Kingdom. Results indicate that advertised sales jobs tend to be for unqualified,relatively inexperienced, individuals, and who are relatively poorly paid.

* Goal Oriented - The driving force behind every Company is increased sales and high profits. Most Companies draw out expected sales targets for every year. The onus lies on the sales team to not only meet these targets but go beyond them. Every sales person must be goal oriented and should work towards matching these sales figures.

* Confident - A sales person should be confident about the product he is selling as well as his own ability to successfully close a sale. Especially in the case of door to door selling, the sales person should be able to interact well with the prospective buyer, gain their trust, arouse an interest and eventually convince them to try a new product. Sales persons should be willing to handle all kinds of tense situations.

* Patient & Courteous - Convincing a prospective customer to buy a product is not an easy task. Selling is an art and requires patience. A sales person should be able to guide a customer through the entire process which begins with a prospective buyer's indifferent attitude towards a brand and ends with them placing an order. The sales person should be courteous and pleasant while taking a buyer through these stages.

* Team Player - A good sales executive must be a good team player as well. An ability to interact and devise good sales plans should come naturally to him.
* Complete Product Knowledge - Every sales executive should be trained well. He should have complete product knowledge including benefits, uses and applications of each product. A good background knowledge will help him to answer all types of questions raised by a prospective buyer.

Well i wanna add one thing in qualites. A person whether it is good marketer or sales person should be cool minded and happy go lucky nature because angry young people cannot become a good marketer or sales person.

Very well said. Of course, the person needs to be goal oriented and technically sound to have complete knowledge about the product he is marketing or selling. He needs to be cool minded and patient enough to see the results coming out.

Passion towards making sales is important attribute for sales persons. Because passion is easy to sell. It’s easy because you’re a believer, and if you’re passionate enough you can make others believers too about your products.

It all starts within ourselves. We need to make people like us and trust us, then respect us. Closing a sale will then be simply a by-product. In such a situation, we can sell anything. We build rapport with prospects allowing them to like us, leading them to agree with us. We listen to their words, try to know and understand them, smartly mirror their action, talk with their language. Once rapport is built, we then demonstrate our expertise about the products or services we're selling. At this time, we can talk about product specification, details of services, and most important, the benefits of our products or services. Once they see our expertise, they can trust us. They believe that we can help them solve their problems with our products and services. At that time, they have respected us. After this stage, filling in order form to close the sale is no longer a problem.

well, a marketing guy should be intelligent and smart enough to understand the market, current trends, customer preferences and perceptions, competitor's strategy. He should have the ability to do a 360 degree analysis of the whole marketing process.He should have leadership qualities as,he has a much bigger role to play than a sales person. while a sales man should have a sales aptitude, enthusiastic, self-motivated, most of all should be a good communicator, must have the ability to influence and change perceptions.

# A good sales person is one who builds relationships
To be a good seller it is important that you build a rapport or a relationship with your client so that they feel comfortable trusting you. Good sales is all about building a bond of mutual trust and understanding between you and your client. This also goes a long way in helping to gain your customers confidence and also makes them come back to do business with you again.

# A good sales person answers his/her phone
Instead of letting an automated answering machine get your phone calls, answer the phone yourself. This shows customers and clients that you care about them and that they are not another sales record in your books. If you are extremely busy hire an assistant or additional staff to handle the phone lines, and know that a human touch is much more effective then a fake robotic voice.

# A good sales person does not make promises he/she can't keep
It is important that your customers know that they can trust you at all times to do a good job. A good sales person should always keep their promises. If you feel that you cannot keep a promise then do not make it and be honest with your customers, they will appreciate you more for your honesty. Breaking a promise only leads to distrust and makes a customer feel that they cannot trust you.
