Hi

1) Do what you love.
You're going to devote a lot of time and energy to starting a business and building it into a successful enterprise, so it's really important that you truly deeply enjoy what you do, whether it be running fishing charters, creating pottery or providing financial advice.

2) Start your business while you're still employed.
How long can most people live without money? Not long. And it may be a long time before your new business actually makes any profits. Being employed while you're starting a business means money in your pocket while you're going through the starting a business process.

3) Don't do it alone.
You need a support system while you're starting a business (and afterwards). A family member or friend that you can bounce ideas off and who will listen sympathetically to the latest business start up crisis is invaluable. Even better, find a mentor or, if you qualify, apply for a business start up program such as The Self-Employment Program. When you're starting a business experienced guidance is the best support sytem of all.

Thanks

Re: Tips for start a new Business

All good advice. You can get an excellent, wise mentor through SCORE--and their services are free. I would also add that entrepreneurs should keep in mind that it's a good idea to offer something that isn't solely the result of your personal efforts. I say this for two reasons: You'll prevent burnout, and you can make a lot more money if you can bring in employees or outsource some of the work to freelancers. For example, if you offer an accounting service, you can only build the business so much, then either you have to stop taking on new clients (thus limiting your income) or you have to be willing to hire a junior accountant, take on a partner, outsource to a competent freelancer, or find some other way of sharing the work.

Re: Tips for start a new Business

Hi

Create a brand. Spend a little money to create a professional logo, business card and stationery. Present a professional image.

Ramp up Online. Make creating a Web site a top priority. A Web site is today’s calling card. You really shouldn’t do without one. Give people a place to go to learn about your business.

Make Your First Sale. This is key. Get that first sale even if it’s friends or family at a discounted rate. This counts as getting started, so go for it.

Promote Testimonials. Get testimonials from your first sales. Start building credibility for your business from day one.

Build Buzz. Be creative. Look for a special promotion, big event, email campaign or something out of the norm for your business to get people talking about you, your product or service.

Thanks

It will also allow you to get a solid targeted reach to they types of customers you specifically need, without a huge expenditure in marketing. With an online local advertising blueprint, you can integrate your website and social media to really get the ball rolling...

Re: Tips for start a new Business

Hi

1) Why are you starting up a business?

Setting up and running a business is a time consuming task - you need to be dedicated and focused and able to structure your time in order to be successful. The rewards of starting up your own business can be great, but think carefully if you have the attributes and right sort of personality to cope with going it alone.

2) Company Structure

You will need to decide what business structure you will trade under (sole trader, limited company, LLP or partnership) and what obligations and responsibilities you will have as the owner of a new business. Read more about these business structures.

3) Skills

Identify your skills and particularly your weaknesses. Be honest and ask friends and colleagues for input. If you are less hot in certain areas, hire people with complimentary skills or seek professional advice when you need it.

4) Funding

Even if you have the best idea in the world, you are unlikely to make a killing instantly. Be conservative with your funding estimates and either save enough money to keep you going while the business goes through its initial stages, or present your bank manager with a well thought out business plan and request sufficient start up funds. You can read about all the available funding options in our business finance section.

Thanks

Re: Tips for start a new Business

1.Save up as much money as possible before starting.
A better plan is to save up as much of the needed investment money as possible, including your living expenses for the first year, or even two. Odds are that your business won't be profitable for one to two years. Even if you get plenty of business coming your way -- and your customers pay you on time, which isn't always a sure thing -- you'll want to be able to invest most of that money back in the business for space, equipment, advertising, and insurance needs.

2.Start on a shoestring.
Think small. Don't rent premises if you can work somewhere else, and don't hire employees until you can keep them busy. (You can hire independent contractors or temps in the meantime.)

3.Protect your personal assets.
When you go into business for yourself, you are usually personally liable for all judgments and debts that the business incurs. This includes business loans, taxes, money owed to suppliers and landlords, and any judgments against the business as a result of a lawsuit. If you don't protect yourself, a creditor can go after your personal assets, such as your car and your house, to pay for these debts.

4.Understand how -- and if -- you will make a profit.
You should be able to state in just a few sentences how your business plans to make a substantial profit. For starters, you need to know your costs: how much you'll spend purchasing inventory, paying the rent, compensating any employees, and covering what is likely to be a surprisingly long list of other costs. Then you can figure out exactly how much you need to sell each month, for how many dollars, to cover those expenses and have an adequate profit besides. These numbers are all you need to create a "break-even analysis."

Doing a business plan first when you're thinking of starting a business is that it can help you avoid sinking your time and money into starting a business that will not succeed.

Most successful businesses take the time to make sure they have a blueprint to success. When you have a blueprint and a right direction to go, you will be so much more successful. Before opening your business you must decide upon the general price level you expect to maintain and you choice of location.

Re: Tips for start a new Business

'Yes, I totally agree with doing what you Love....,'

One of the first reasons I started Blogging was because I liked writing and begun a Travel Blog writing about vacations, being able to share my experiences with friends. Than when I wrote a tiny little ebook I created several other theme specific blogs that all are related to that tiny little ebook as a way to promote it. In this process I also discovered Affiliate Marketing, something I write about on my Home Business Lifestyle Blog.

Because of this Blogging I discovered Affiliate Marketing (basically an easy way of selling other peoples products for a commission) something that you can easily build up when you are in a Job. Because you basically only bring people to a Webshop of your associate you don't have to worry about more complicated things like a 24 hours customer service or things like that. The down side is that usually you can't expect to earn huge amounts of commissions either when they do most of the work.

Bringing me to point 3, you won't be doing it allone and you can get support from your associate(s)
because your success is their success, a great Win/Win-situation.

For what my actual tips is concerned. People that don't know anything about Online Business (possibly with the best intentions) can become somewhat unsupportive or negative about your Business and could even bring you down at moments that you would rather see support. I do think that it's very important to realise that you might need to 'educate' friends and family in simple terms explaining to them what you are doing. Explaining it in a right way otherwise they might simply not understand or think that you are working in some kind of Online Scam. (there are a lot of Scams online, So they actually might even be a little bit worried about you.) Especially people that never done anything else than working in a Job. They might not understand it and find everything that's not a Job somewhat 'Spooky'. They might be unsupportive because they care for you. (Others might even slightly envy your independance!)

'Key thing is that you explain it
in a simple easy to understand way'.

When you want to explain them about your Online Business they might not understand it, or might resist to even listen to it or might for example think you want to sell something to them. So I do think that a Great way to simpy explain Affiliate Marketing in a way it's easier to relate to it for them, is to simply keep it simple and for example tell that you help selling known brand name products online. (especially when they are also familiar with some of the brand names you (pre) sell on your site(s)) Than they might possibly be more understanding and supportive.

All the Best,
To your Happy - Small Business - Inspiration,
HP
