Customer orientation (CO) is the set of beliefs in sales that says that customer needs and satisfaction are the priority of an organization. It focuses on dynamic interactions between the organization and customers as well as competitors in the market and its internal stakeholders. It involves a continuous improvement in business processes. It is "the business seen from the point of view of its final result, that is, from the customer’s point of view."

Customer orientation and sales orientation are two extremes in dealing with customers. A salesperson can never adopt both attitudes in serving a customer. Customer orientation places an emphasis on listening to customers (e.g., I try to find out what kind of product would be most helpful to a customer) and dialogue (e.g., I try to get customer to discuss their needs with me). Customer-oriented salespeople tend to exhibit behaviors that enhance long term customer satisfaction, possibly at the expense of immediate sales.

Re: Customer orientation

Hi

The heart of a market orientation is its customer focus. To create superior value for buyers continuously requires that a seller understand a buyer's entire value chain, not only as it is today but also as it evolves over time. Buyer value can be created at any point in the chain by making the buyer either more effective in its markets or more efficient in its operations.

Thanks

Re: Customer orientation

Hi

Unlike the price sensitive orientation strategy, or the quality sensitive orientation strategy, the niche strategy has a very narrow customer orientation. The strategy involves finding a small audience and aiming a particular product at that audience. This means that the product is not necessarily the best, or the cheapest, but it is the one that best fits the needs of a particular consumer. In addition to market segmentation, this can be achieved through customization. Customization is when a company makes a generic product, but then offers features that can be added on to suit the needs of individual consumers. This allows a product to be aimed at a specific, individual consumers.

Thanks

Re: Customer orientation

I would go further and say that it's not only about listening to your customers, but about respecting and admiring them. This is especially effective if you work in a big company where you need to manage salesmen in customer oriented behavior. It's a good thing to consider sharing stories about them, hanging pictures of customers in social rooms. Listening without profound respect is just another training-room trick.

Re: Customer orientation

I tend to think that customer orientation in the long run is more effective. However businesses sacrifice long-run for the immediate sale which is not a good idea
