Why a good domain name is important

New Member

Acquiring a domain name is an important first step in building a successful online business. Below are the most popular reasons why individuals and businesses own domain names.

1. Improve Your Marketing and Visibility
The right domain name allows customers an easy way to remember and find you. It's your location on the web. It's also your email address.

2. Build Credibility
Using your domain for your website and to personalize your email helps establish credibility and professionalism. For instance, an email address such as jen@buydomains.com is more professional than jen127@freeemailservice.com.

3. Protect Your Brand
Purchase the domain name that best represents your business name. Domains are valuable online real estate. Secure the right name and keep it out of the hands of your competitors.
You may also find many attractive domains for your business. Securing more than one helps protect your brand and increase your reach. You can easily direct as many domains as you want to a single website.

4. Acquire More Traffic
Some domains already receive traffic. This traffic principally comes from direct type-in or referral traffic. Direct type-in is when an internet user types the domain directly into her browser, such as typing 'www.photography.com.' Referral traffic typically comes from links on other websites.

5. As an Investment
Similar to real estate, domain names are investments. Domain values increase daily. You yourself can make your domain name more valuable by building and marketing your website.

Re: Why a good domain name is important

I can agree with the majority of that and think that it's truly helpful to the newer online business start-ups. I would just like to add a little more to it.

Brandable domains

A brandable domain is a unique name that you create and nobody else has or ever heard of. This type of domain will normally have 0 searches for the name and never been used before. Brandable names are ideal for businesses looking to remain unique in every way and don't mind building from the ground up to establish a brand presence. It's also Ideal for pre-existing brick-n-mortar businesses that decide they want to extend their established brand online. These names are normally easy to get page one search engine results for as there is no competition for the search phrase.

Generic Keyword domains
A generic keyword name is normally a key phrase of some kind that people already type into search engines. These type names will normally have higher competition and be much much harder to get on page one of a search engines results page. The benefit of this type of domain is that if you can get it to page 1 of a search engine, you can get instant traffic (visitors).

The Combo
There are lots of businesses online that use a combination of both a branded domain & a few generic keyword names. Because a Brandable domain can tend to be a little slow in branding itself & getting the attention of consumers on a small marketing budget, the generic keyword domains assist in attracting potentials.

In a nut shell, The brandable is developed first, then a few generic keyword domains are selected that target search phrases for the industry of the brandable domain. These generic domains are then promoted to hopefully reach page one of search engines & pull a % of the pre-existing traffic. While the traffic is on the generic site reading and looking through things they are also being exposed to the original Brand of the brandable domain and being encouraged to visit repetitively.

While this tactic may not be fore everyone, it's proved to be successful for many new start ups looking for a more rapid growth.

Hope that helps 🙂

2. The name must be a common or popular name which is easily memorize.
3. The name must be attractive which create attention of client.

Re: Why a good domain name is important

Basically domain names are essential as the Internet's addressing scheme is ineffective without them. A brief, outstanding domain name can make the difference between creating a successful Web presence and getting lost in cyberspace. Having your own domain name makes your company look professional.

Re: Why a good domain name is important

I'm trying to figure out a domain name and I was wondering do you think it is better to have a catchy domain name or a domain name that contains your target keyword?

When choosing a domain name, whether its a branding or generic keyword you need to consider the message that you want your name to send. In the past, corporations have found that a quality domains is vital to a website’s success. Most internet users will remember a website because of its name. That domain name could also influence other sites to link to it which can increase ranking with search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. You should therefore learn what effects different domains can lead to.

Some e-marketing experts believe that “Branding” is a key factor when picking a domain name. So businesses choose a domain largely based on their brand name, some examples included are: eBay, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft.

On the other end of the spectrum some believe when choosing the appropriate domain name, it is important to research generic keyword product domains. Some companies use a keyword domain instead of a brand name, they do this to benefit from search engine traffic. These online businesses who use a generic keyword domain allows the website to rank higher for targeted keywords. Taking advantage of the search engines results and type-in traffic, capitalizing in potential sales.

Another option that most online companies practice is both. One perfect example is Toys R Us who actually has two domain names and have developed a site on each one, which are the brand domain ToysRUs.com and the product domain Toys.com. Whatever you choose, always keep in mind that you should have a quality domain name included in your marketing plan. Hopefully, these tips will help you in choosing a domain name and succeed in your online advertising endeavors. Happy Domaining!

Re: Why a good domain name is important

Hello,
Good domain selection also guarantees long term viral effect. Especially if it's the kind of domain name that's very easy to remember and is highly relevant to the niche it represents.

Re: Why a good domain name is important

I like the brandable domain strategy. Inventing then branding your own name does require some serious work, but it will eventually make you a stand out. Think "Kleenex", as opposed to "tissue". Think "Miscrosoft, as opposed to "software".

Also, anyone considering a start up would be well-advised to search for the domain name before naming the business. Registering the name of the business and then discovering someone else already owns the domain would certainly be maddening.

Re: Why a good domain name is important

Ya It is important in Ranking. A domain name that matches the concept of your business (instead of your exact business name), you might draw Web surfers in search of that topic.
