I think you should try Adobe Illustrator, it's one of the best and easy to use software. To design a top notch logo you need to be familiar with marketing and apply those skills to a design that will meet the goals of your client. All the glassy effects and c**p will never win you an award if you you are copying c**p and relying on software filters.

most logo designers do not use photoshop. the problem with making a logo in photoshop is that it's not a vector image, meaning that there is a size limit on how big the logo can be made. so if you were to create a logo, then you wanted it make into a sign for the front of a store, or a vehicle wrap, the image will get pixelated. you should use a program like adobe illustrator that creates vector images, vector images can be made as big or as small as you want them without losing any resolution.
