Re: What Is Social Marketing?

Social marketing is the use of advertising practices to effect good social change. Some examples include advertising campaigns designed to get people to stop smoking or marketing ads that encourage people to eat healthier foods. This type of marketing differs from business marketing in that it targets positive social change while business marketing targets increased financial benefit.

Re: What Is Social Marketing?

Social marketing is being used more and more as one of the key tasks in internet marketing for increasing web traffic. Social sites such as Digg are starting to see more and more internet marketers entering the network - for the purpose of pitching their products. These marketers are on the hate list of the real community who are using the social sites for information and fun. It doesn't need to be like this. Social marketing can be used effectively by internet marketers and also they don't need to be annoying and get their accounts banned.

Re: What Is Social Marketing?

Social marketing works to help people change their behaviors to become healthier or to improve society or the world in some way.
Social marketing was "born" as a discipline in the 1970s, when Philip Kotler and Gerald Zaltman realized that the same marketing principles that were being used to sell products to consumers could be used to "sell" ideas, attitudes and behaviors. Kotler and Andreasen define social marketing as "differing from other areas of marketing only with respect to the objectives of the marketer and his or her organization. Social marketing seeks to influence social behaviors not to benefit the marketer, but to benefit the target audience and the general society." This technique has been used extensively in international health programs, especially for contraceptives and oral rehydration therapy (ORT), and is being used with more frequency in the United States for such diverse topics as drug abuse, heart disease and organ donation.

Re: What Is Social Marketing?

Social marketing uses the same marketing principles used to sell products to consumers as a way to change ideas, behaviors and attitudes and benefit society. An example of social marketing in action is the work done by thetruth.com to end smoking. Social marketing was created in the 1970s by Philip Kotler and Gerald Zaltman. Now social marketing is being used to get consumers to behave in a green way and help end global warming. There is an interesting story about this on NPR today. Go here to read the article and listen to the story.

Re: What Is Social Marketing?

Social marketing can be applied to promote merit goods, or to make a society avoid demerit goods and thus to promote society's well being as a whole. For example, this may include asking people not to smoke in public areas, asking them to use seat belts, or prompting to make them follow speed limits.
