I do this :

Web-Directory submission:-Directory submission is known to be a proven method of link building for some time .All the directories are usually organized by categories so you need to submit under the category that best suits your site and theme.
RSS Submission:-If you have a blog or site with RSS Feed setup, then there are hundreds of RSS directories and ping sites where you can submit your feed for backlinks.
Article Submission:-There are thousands of free article directories out there that accept free submissions.

There is one fact about link building is if you are placing links on any pages where there are too many links then it won't be much effective so try to place links where links are less but content is enough..

If you do directory submission then the main benefit you get is your site page rank would increase and if you are submitting different description then it is really awesome for you as all the description would be indexed.
