Here are some of my advertising tips:
Know your budget
only go after your target audience
show your advantage over competition
have an image for your brand
advertise in the right ways
don't offer things you cant deliver
test your ads

As we all know that advertising is very much necessary and effective but for that it is necessary for a person to follow some of the basic like only target audience, advantage over competition, image for your brand, advertise in the right ways, present nicely and many more.

Great thread Dave and advertising truly is an interesting subject to study. I like studying the advertising greats like David Oglivey. I leak reading there thoughts and books to get a good glimpse in what true advertising is all about. Here is a good quote about advertising:

"I have a theory that the best ads come from personal experience. Some of the good ones I have done have really come out of the real experience of my life, and somehow this has come over as true and valid and persuasive."
David Ogilvy

I like studying the advertising legends methods then you can start to get a real sense on how to advertise. I am also surprised that in the basics of advertising that the internet/computers was not mentioned. I think it is pretty much a must these days to at least promote a little online. Does anyone else have any cool advertising quotes from famous business man?

Rather than knowing about competitors you need to know about the thing they have been following for targeting the audience which you are targeting and keeping eye on result whether they have got success or not. Design of different promotional tools like banner, signs, introduction video and website have good impact on making a visual impact of your advertisement to your visitors.
