I am a novice at webdevelopment. Should I buy Frontpage or Dreamweaver it looks like Dreamweaver would be a more rich program but it also looks a lot more complicated.

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

Sites designed with Frontpage look terrible.

There's your answer!

Then again, it's design skill that'll make or break a site. 🙂

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

We were told some firms use MS Frontpage for easy editing and Dreamweaver for more complicated development.

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

We do exactly that we use each program for different reasons but Frontpage does have a lot of limitations

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

We use Frontpage for most of the development for complicated stuff we have our web developers complete it.

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

I would suggest you learn one program and learn it well and dreamweaver is the gold standard it may take you longer to get to know it but it will be worth your effort because it is much more flexible.

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

I had Frontpage on my system but I went out and got Dreamweaver and tried to use it - it was a big mistake I am not a techie and the system is very difficult to use. I tried using Frontpage and it is much easier and more intuitive I agree with the other comments it is not as robust but for what I use if for it does not need to be.

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

FrontPage will be first since it is the one that has been most widely used on campus. FrontPage’s strength is in it simplicity for the user. It is considered better for those new to HTML and WYSIWYG editors.toy story Firstly, since most people are very accustomed to the workflow of Microsoft’s Word, the transition to FrontPage is quite seamless: the layout is like a beefed-up Word application. All of the same commands and the same icons are present. Secondly, FrontPage has what is called FrontPage Server Extensions.

Going into the details of server extensions is not within the scope of this article, but rest assured that their presence is to make the user’s task of creating Web pages easier. For example, creating forms that collect information from users is a cinch. All that is required is to drag-and-drop form elements into the page, set a few settings about how to retrieve this information and voilà! it is done. Also, in FrontPage 2002 (the newest version), database features have been added to allow the creation of dynamic content. All of this is managed invisibly by the beloved extensions.

Although there are some downsides to FrontPage, because of our licensing agreement [1] with Microsoft, we are not allowed to use the software to express views that would “disparage” Puertas de vidrioMicrosoft or any of their products. Since Claudia Lynch uses FrontPage to post these articles on the Web, I suppose that I am not able to talk about any of these downsides lest I would breach the agreement. Hopefully it is within the scope of the agreement to say that all products have different strengths and weakness. FrontPage is not exempt from such realities and actually some of its strengths are also some of its weaknesses. For instance, its ease of use makes it a bit unwieldy to do more complex tasks. Another is, because of its likeness to Word, it flows like a text editor. This asset becomes problematic when higher level editing is needed (especially with graphics), since Web documents are markedly different from text documents. These differences between Web and text documents should be reflected in the tools that create them. Dreamweaver is one such editor that has fashioned itself to be an appropriate tool for the Web development task.

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

Don't think Frontpage can compete with Dreamweaver - the extentions and the output you get from Dreamweaver is way beyond the microsoft software

Re: MS Frontpage or Dreamweaver

Hello Friends,
I had not used Front Page prior to this evaluation, having only used Composer and Dreamweaver before, so much of what I learned were just basic operations. Still I was able to get the hang of it fairly quickly.
What I liked:
* The interface, like so many of Microsoft's products, was familiar to me. The application had a similar look and feel to MS Word, or PowerPoint. Navigation was not difficult, and menus were in all the old familiar places. "
* Viewing the source code was merely a click of a tab at the lower left. From there, it could be easily manipulated and changed if needed.
* Frames, if you're into that sort of thing, were really easy to create and set up, due to Front Page's Frame Wizard. "
* The Insert menu had a lot of great, ready made goodies to put in your site, like Banner Ad Manager (I couldn't get it to work, though), Hit Counters, A Scrolling Marquee, a Table of Contents and more. "
* Also in the Insert menu was a very easy to use Form insert feature. Clicking on a form object, like a text field, automatically added a form box and a submit and reset buttons, already coded. You only had to select the object and go to Form Properties (In Insert>Form>Form Properties) to designate the server, the CGI script, who to e-mail the results to, and where to get the confirmation page. Everything is right there. "
* Navigation is pretty easy, as well. Once you have established your root and home page in the Folder List, the rest seems to take care of itself. Images and other items are added easily and imbedded. "
* The Absolute positioning feature. Its perhaps the best thing in Front Page, and I rarely hear anyone sing its praises. This feature allows you to select an object and move it anywhere you want on the page, and IT STAYS PUT! You can even move a table, an image, anything but text. It will not allow you to wrap other things, however. For that, you will need to switch to the Wrapped Positioning (in the Format menu). So you do need to be aware of your text.

Thanks
