I like to start out with longtail and local keywords and build out from there. You will also want to try and stick to keywords where the competition is low and learn how to rank high for those and then consider attacking some of the more competitive keyword markets as they are usually already saturated and taken by the best in the business. It takes a lot of hard work and specialty knowledge to leverage keywords to the best of your advantage so do not expect them to come quickly or cheaply. Hire an expert or two from a freelance site and try to learn as much as possible and as cheaply as possible about the process. There are many awesome free keyword tools out there so constantly check those out and study them as well. Google has an awesome free keyword tool. Also look into Bing's webmaster tool suite. There are lots of other great keyword tools out there. Keywords are super super important but valuable and viable content probably trumps even keyword prowess. There is lots of free knowledge and tools out there so it is just a matter of diving in, studying hard, doing your research and putting in the time and effort.
