I have been asked to present a paper in my company about small business facebook apps, i have seen many big brands like coke, starbucks using apps and fanpages to a great effect but i am yet to see any small business building its own fanpage / app and gaining moderate success for the same.
Does any one know such apps?

Even by just having a fan page would bring in business. Businesses can quickly advertise to their followers a promotion they otherwise would have not known about by simply posting to their wall. I am a follower of all the local restaurants and have found out about many specials through Facebook.
For businesses that sell a tangible product I believe they too should have a fan page to advertise new products and promotions. If you have an "attractive" product and sell online as well you could also benefit through the use of a facebook gift app to allow users to send virtual gifts (of products you sell) to each other.

I have the same question, is there an app created by a small business? If so what is it called? and what kind of results are they seeing with that? I agree that the social web is a necessary part of business, but I have not seen small businesses use facebook apps, only facebook fanpages that few say gives a significant ROI.

Social media can be very useful in terms of marketing and branding of a business. But many social media tools should not be used at the same time. Using facebook, twitter, linkedin and blogs at the same time trying to market a business can be a very frustrating experience.
I work for a startup called EF Buys, and social media marketing is one of our main tools for marketing. We use emails as our main tool.
Facebook is also good, but some study suggests that 99% of the "facebook fans" never visit your site again.
