Some people uses Alexa to spy on the traffic that other websites make (just to give them an idea) but if you would like to monitor your own, just use analytics instead. Alexa is also one of the tools that most domain or website buyers use to see on what is the worth of a website. the higher the traffic, the better it should sell.

From my understanding the Alexa rating is based on the number of people with the Alexa plugin that are searching your site. Given that a lot of people don't have the Alexa plugin it won't give you a completely accurate view of what sort of traffic you are getting. I personally use those Alexa rankings to give me a very general view of how much a site gets visited.

I don't think that there is any benefit of high alexa reputation. High alexa reputation not helps in getting good ranking.It is only good for competition purpose.
