We have tried advertising on sites but we have had more luck advertising using very specific keywords on google and yahoo. I guess it depends on the product or service you are selling.

I agree with Indivision especially if you have a well defined target audience and a site that they go to. Many times on adwords people are just clicking on your ads that are just browsing and may have no interest in your product.
