I am also in Colorado and I too rely on local companies, to help my local economy. Some years I send gift cards from local vendors that can be used online - Rocky Mountain Chocolate, Celestial Seasonings, etc. One year I sent all of my clients a live coffee plant because it was something unusual and it was from a local company. I try to find unique and interesting gifts and I print and hand-sign my 'holiday' cards that go with the gift (non-religious, of course). Unless it is a 'one-size fits all' (like the coffee plants) gift size depends on the size of the client. i set a maximum of 5% of my net income on gifts.

You should build a personal realtionship with yuor clients, find out their hobbies and interests. I had a big client who was bignon fishing, I gave him a a book on the best fishing destinations in the UK (where he's from).
