With my husband's contracting business, things have been steady, though not without periodic adjustments in his business model over the past couple of years. Two + years ago, it was all residential building . He made the transition to remodeling and a little commercial about 1.75 years ago, and that has hummed along nicely. He's accumulated a number of sources of steady jobs, that are happy with his work, and loyal to him. Occasionally, to fill in the gaps, he's done atypical work, using the skills and equipment that he's acquired, such as landscape construction and demolition. He keeps no full time employees, and subs whatever he can't do himself within the allotted time frame.

Re: What is Small Business?

I think a small business is like entrepreneurship. So it's like having limited funds and a start-up.

A small business is a business that is privately owned and operated, with a small number of employees and relatively low volume of sales. Small businesses are normally privately owned corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorships. The legal definition of "small" varies by country and by industry, ranging from fewer than 15 employees under Fair Work Act 2009, 50 employees in the European Union,[citation needed] and fewer than 500 employees to qualify for many U.S. Small Business Administration programs.[1] Small businesses can also be classified according to other methods such as sales, assets, or net profits.
