Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

1. Your Domain Name Should Be Your Website Name
Naming your site after your domain may seem obvious to some of you, but you'll be surprised to learn that not every website is named after the domain name even when the webmaster owns that domain name.

2. Generic Names Or Brand Name Domains?

I know that a number of people seem to think that your domain name really must be some generic name like "cars.com" if you are selling cars. Witness, for example, how much money those generic names are being sold for. But seriously, if you were looking for a car, you'll probably already have some brands in mind, and you're more like to try out things like generalmotors.com or toyota.com rather than just cars.com.

For that reason, I personally feel that a domain name that matches your brand name is very important. The very name that you use to advertise your product is the name that you will want for your domain, because that is the first thing that people will try in their browser. It is also

3. Plurals, "The", and "My" Forms of the Domain Name

Very often, if you can't get the domain name you want, the domain name registrar will suggest alternate forms of the name you typed. For example, if you wanted website.com, and it was taken (of course it is), it might suggest forms like:

thewebsite.com
mywebsite.com
websites.com

and the like, if they were not already taken as well. The question is, should you take them?

My personal opinion is that if you take the "the..." and "my..." forms of the domain name, you must always remember to promote your site with the full form of the name. Otherwise, people are likely to forget to affix the necessary "the" or "my".

Hope this all helps you to choose you a good domain name..

Re: Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

Sticks in the mind - The best domain names stick in the mind. Unless you havea a huge advertising budget to make your name known (as with Amazon and other similar business) you'd better chose something that people will equate to your site, your information and your products.

Matches your business - Your domain name should match the theme of your site. This mentally prepares your visitors for your information, and more or less pre-disposes them to what you have to offer. On the other hand, a domain name which doesn't match your site will not attract the desired visitors; in fact, it will actually send them away.

Name of Product - If you can register the name of your product as a domain name, you've got it made. This makes it very simple for your visitors to figure out how to get directly to your product information.

Something People Are Likely To Type - Think of common questions or phrases that relate to your business. Then put it together as a name, assuming someone might type that phrase. This is very useful for a second domain name which redirects to the first.

A name easy to say on the telephone - My wife's site is about how to survive asthma - thus, she bought the domain named survivingasthma.com. This makes it very simple to tell people what to type to get to her site over the phone. It's hard for people to make a mistake. On the other hand, making a name of xuayf.com means nothing and is difficult to say on the phone.

Your Name - If you can, it's a great idea to get your own name as a domain name. This allows you to put information about yourself (a bio page, a resume or something similar) up to service your visitors. This is espcially useful if you are famous or well known in your industry.

The word "MY" followed by something - It's very popular to register a domain name which is your company, product or service prefixed by the word "MY". Thus, if you had a wallpaper site you might register "mywallpaper.com".

A name very early in the alphabet - This is useful for listing in directories and such. The earlier you can get listed in a directory the more likely your web site is to be seen.

Re: Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

Hello everyone,

# - Pick a domain name that is easy for people to remember.
# - Try to avoid being too creative with the spelling of the domain name.
# - Never underestimate the value of keyword selection when picking out good domain names.
# - Use your company or brand name if it is available. If not, try variations or add a qualifier that describes your business
# - Shorter is better, but avoid being cryptic.

Re: Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

Hi

Consider prefixes or suffixes : In many instances you will find that the domain name you want is already registered. In this case you should consider adding a prefix or suffix to your domain name.

Keep your domain name legal : Make sure that the domain name you want to register does not violate any copyrights or trademarks. If your domain name contains common descriptive words then you do not have to worry too much about any legal issues.

Avoid numbers : Having numbers in a domain name is not a good idea unless the number is part of the business name. For example, “1800Flowers.com” is good domain name because the number 1800 is actually part of the business name. In this example the phone number and domain name are the same!

Thanks

Re: Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

1. Contain your company/brand name.
2. Does not contain hyphen or numbers (unless necessary or they are part of your brand)
3. Easy to spell. Should be able to spell correctly just by listening to it.
4.The lesser the words, the easier to remember and more valuable the domain name will be.
5.Always make .COM your first choice. If it is taken, then only go for .NET, .BIZ or other general TLD or country code TLD (if your company is based in Malaysia, register .com.my NOT .co.uk or .com.sg).
6. Descriptive. People should be able to get a hint about your website or business from your domain name. If it contains key terms, it may help in search engine ranking.
7. With the price of domains getting cheaper, anyone can afford to register multiple domains just for one website. Especially for domain with generic names, don't just register .com only, register .net, org, .biz, .com.my, etc... as well.
8. Proof read it. Make sure your domain name cannot be read in other ways that brings totally different meaning or worse, embarrassing meaning.
9.Make sure the domain name is not a trademark of another company. Legal battle of domain name dispute is not pretty. To make sure you have a clear name, check it with your attorney or a trademark company.
10. If your desired domain name is taken by someone else and you have the budget, offer to buy the domain name from the current owner. Who can resist a good price?

Re: Tips on Choosing a Good Domain Name

domain names can be really long or really short… the shorter your domain name, the easier it will be for people remember. consider domain names that may not include the name of your company, but rather what your company provides.. hyphens help because it allows you to clearly separate multiple words in a domain name another advantage to using hyphens is that search engines are able to pick up each unique word in the domain name as key words.. be very careful not to register domain names that include trademarked names.. search engines and directories are the most important on-line marketing channel, so consider how your domain name choice affects site placement before you register the domain. most directories simply list links to home pages in alphabetical order
