Outdoor Advertising in CT/RI

Hey there,

I'm new here, this is my first post. My name is james and I'm 20 years old, and am looking to open a small business to lift me off the ground.

I am the Co-owner of a Karate School in Coventry, RI. It's doing well, and business is great. However, this being a partnership, I take home 50% of all profit gain, and do most all the work. I love this job, but $60k (-) taxes isn't my life goal.

I've been tossing around the idea of starting a small outdoor advertising business with smaller billboards, bus benches, etc. I have looked around for information, but have had no luck.

So here's the question:
Is this an easy business to start? The no overhead sounds very appealing to me, and the startup costs are somewhat minimal. However, I know zoning will be a brute.

Any advise is greatly appreciated, and I thank you all in advance!

I had a friend that looked at it and yes zoning was an issue as well as finding the land to put it on. Lamar seems to control most of the premium spaces. If you are looking to have a business with less overhead what about putting up a Karate supply store that drop ships the equipment. You have a natural audience and it is your expertise.

The no overhead sounds appealing but you also have to worry about getting advertisers in this economy. You could end up buying the rights or the property where the sign sits and then finding it difficult to get advertisers and the you are stuck with the costs
