Re: Good time to start a business?

Hello friends......

There may be a few advantages to starting a business at the end of the year - say between Thanksgiving and Christmas or whatever seasonal holidays you celebrate in December, including:

* Most shoppers are in a buying mood. If you plan to sell products this could work to your advantage, especially if you plan on starting a business that involves selling gift items.
* You may be able to reap some tax advantages by starting a business before the end of the year, specifically by capturing some deductions, including, but not limited to office-in-home tax deductions.
* Because stores are very competitive and offer extended sales during the holidays, you might be able to find some good deals on the supplies and equipment your need for starting a business, so you might conceivably get a bit of a break on your start up costs.

Thanks

Re: Good time to start a business?

Hello
1. Make the most of low costs.
The recession means business start-up costs are lower than in boom times. Lester started his first business during a recession and says it meant he could afford employees who would otherwise have wanted too much money, or found other jobs. It also meant he could rent office space for substantially less money and that his advertising budget went much further.

"For almost all business that start up it takes longer to build sales than they expect, but if you can adjust expectations it's much cheaper to start in a recession and work towards a long, slow build," he told CNN.

2. Be efficient.
Sophie Kummer, of the Federation of Small Businesses, says that if you can work from home you may be able to reduce your running costs. And if your employees can do the same, you can do without office space altogether.

"Working from home means you don't have to pay overheads," Kummer told CNN. "The recession is also a good time to think of energy efficiency -- fighting climate change and saving money go hand in hand."

3. Take strength from adversity.
Hayley Williams, of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies (NFEA), says the pressures of recession can help focus your business mind.

"When times are good it can be tempting for someone to start a business without thinking it through," she told CNN.

She says that in a recession it's more important than ever to have the right product, mind set and support, but that need for solid foundations will stand you in good stead for the future.

Williams said that at a recent NFEA conference, Josephine Fairley, the co-founder of Green & Black's chocolate, explained that her business had been made stronger by starting in the recession of 1991, simply because the tough economic environment meant it had to be.

Re: Good time to start a business?

I do think that it also depends on the kind of Business
it is that you want to start.

For example in my case I offer info about 'The Home Business Lifestyle'
that gives people Inspiration for building their own Online Business,
info about how you can build a Business without having to quit your day job.

and in this time with layoffs it's alway's nice
to know that you can build on other complementing streams of income.

And in the last few months I did see
a tremendous increase in
the amount of weekly visitors
to my Blogspot(s).

All the Best,
To your Happy - Home Business - Inspiration,

Re: Good time to start a business?

Hello Friends....

There are a lot of different factors to consider, first of all, in what country is this business operating? In the United States the financial system is a complete ruin and the once prestigious well respected banks and institutions are to blame, i.e. I would not want to be borrowing money in America at this time, Canada's banks however have managed to weather the storm (less dumb assets) for the most part. Secondly in what market will this business attempt to make a profit? Right now would be a good time to consider investing in a company that will operate in the new energy economy, and it is bad time obviously for most industries as a whole. With that said, a firm only enters a market if there's demand for what it sells anyways, forget about the state of the economy, firms will enter and exit in boom and ****. So is it a good time to start a business, there really is no right or wrong answer, starting a business right now that takes advantage of new consumer demands, that is operated in a efficient method, could stand to make a of profit, but of course there is risk involved in any business decision, right now minimizing risks in this economy would not be easy.

Thanks

Re: Good time to start a business?

I think it's the perfect time - but it really depends on the business you are starting. Some service industries are bound to make a turn - consider the housing mes we are in, if the trends continue, realtors will be making a killing here pretty soon - and if you have your own company you ought to be sitting pretty nicely.

That said, I'm no expert, I just know this: people will always be willing to pay for quality - be it a good or a service. If quality is at the forefront then business will follow. If, when business follows, you have treated your employees well, they will stay loyal which will make you more profitable (less training, less hiring hassle, etc).

MSN and yahoo have both been running stories on businesses of late. I think the vibe in the US is that folks will start to trust businesses they can see from the front door to the back - meaning, the neighborhood business rather than some glass building business that can hide its accountability.

Anytime is a good time to start a business. You do need the knowledge and skill to make it happen. Money and the right employees is another avenue to venture. Good Luck and don't make a plan B.

Re: Good time to start a business?

Hello Friends,
Nowadays, the marketplace is rife with risk, so you may wonder whether it’s a good idea to launch a business during a downturn, especially with layoff numbers mounting daily.Starting a business during an economic crisis sounds absolutely crazy but let’s put aside our concerns of risk for the moment, and think about some of the advantages. If you are afraid of losing your job due to the economic meltdown, starting a new business may be the perfect antidote. The availability and reduced cost of talent is especially an advantage to businesses that need technical and/or specialized staff. With even supposedly recession-proof businesses such as those in the gaming industry shedding staff, there are all kinds of trained, talented people looking for work.
Thanks.

Re: Good time to start a business?

That's a great point Peter.

There is a wealth of talent out there and looking for work. I think there is a lot of factors you must consider like your target market and advertisement. Your skill set is also something to consider as well as your support. Everyone needs support.

Good luck and good fortune.

Re: Good time to start a business?

Starting a business is tricky! But on the other hand, people are doing it every day!
But the truth is whether you have money or not you can make it happen at any time!
In some, not all, but some instances a down economy is going to be harder than an up economy, depending on your niche, but if you're dedicated, you have created a decent plan, and most important of all, you have the emotion of desire that will help you through all of the bumpy roads, you can make it. Just make sure to put aside a budget for good advertising and dedicate yourself everyday to going out and selling.

Now if you want to make it a lot easier on yourself, getting an investor, a loan, or a grant, and having the startup money from the beginning, would be a better idea than just starting from your garage. But hey, we all know the story of Bill Gates and many others who decided to take a road less walked.

Good Luck!
