As a starting place... i would suggest you go for an eBay store ~$10 per month. This is where you can make your mistakes and go through the learning curve of operating an online store. Then progress on to owning and operating your own website and e-commerce store.

I think one needs traffic to sell online and therefore SEO is essential for your website. One should keep various unique products and keep adding new content and products to the website.

Very true. I am in the process of setting up my own online store and while by no means I am tech savvy, the details are just that. Details. As long as you breakdown the process into smaller chunks, it is not complex. Time consuming, maybe, but not complex.
I figure I will take some time upfront to do it right. In the process, I am also learning a lot about the whole mechanics of how this works.

It's not too late to start online business now days. You still have time to start again from the scratch. Make money from online business is not that difficult. You will need to invest your time developing your site promotion and design.
Get SEO done from a renowned company. Keep adding new products at regular intervals.

Yeah, that's basically it. I work for a online deal site which is also a startup, called EF Buys
The basic concept of starting it was not complex,
According to the steps suggested
Business: Deals for small business
Market: 3 million small businesses in the US
The website is not that difficult to build.

Once the capital is in place, all is good to go.
