What is Drop Shipping?

Drop shipping is a product delivery method in which the seller (retailer) accepts payment for an order, but the customer receives the product(s) directly from the manufacturer. In a drop shipping arrangement, the retailer acts as a middleman between the manufacturer and the customer. His profit in the transaction is the difference between the wholesale and retail price of the items sold.

Drop shipping is very beneficial to smaller retail shops, internet-only storefronts and those who primarily use catalogs for sales. Customers of these outlets don't always expect to walk out with their purchases, so a slight delay between ordering and drop shipping is not a drawback. A representative item may be displayed on the store's shelves or pictured in its catalog, but the actual product purchased may be sitting in a factory's warehouse 3000 miles away.

Re: What is Drop Shipping?

Hello.....................

I have had plenty of packages delivered by the post office. However, I have had a few that were drop shipping. What is the difference? I realize that with drop shipping it's just at your door when it arrives - period. However, who delivers it? Please tell me more if you know about this. Thank you.

When you pay for an item from a company, sometimes they don't have that item in stock or they have an arrangement with a distributor or manufacturer to send that item from their factory, that is called "drop shipping". The company you buy from orders the product from the drop shipper and they send it to you. It helps the business by not having to ship an item from Los Angeles to New York, if the drop shipper is in close by New Jersey. Its saves money by reducing the time and expense of shipping from one place to another.

Re: What is Drop Shipping?

Although "drop shipping" does involve the shipping and mailing of products, overall it is more a method of retailing that has gained popularity with the advent of online shopping. Basically, drop shipping is an arrangement that a retailer makes with a wholesale distributor. The retailer sells the product, and the wholesaler then ships it to the customer complete with the retailer's label on the package. This arrangement benefits the wholesaler who gains retail outlets and sales of a product, as well as the retailer who collects a percentage of the sale, but doesn't have to worry about shipping or carrying an inventory.

Re: What is Drop Shipping?

Drop Shipping is a very useful service if delivered by the right person in the right way. But just as it has the ability to make a concession, it also has the ability to break an existing business. In general, they do so with the help of their fee structure, and therefore it becomes important for to understand their fee structure and be prepared to differentiate.

Re: What is Drop Shipping?

Drop shipping is a way to sell products over the Internet without having to purchase or carry inventory. You put our products online, either on eBay or other auction sites, and when someone buys one of its products, you order a product from the drop shipper. The drop shipper then ships the product directly to your customer.

Re: What is Drop Shipping?

Drop shipping is a great idea especially with the emergence of the internet and several small retail companies that simple do not have the means to compete with bigger business when it comes to logistics. Drop shipping is certainly a great way for smaller businesses to work. One other solution would be to use a Columbus self storage facility for keeping stocks like I use especially if the wholesaler would be a small business in themselves.

Re: What is Drop Shipping?

As in any business, some risks are involved in drop shipping. For example, back ordering may occur when a seller places a shipment request with a wholesaler, but the product is sold out. Back ordering may be accompanied by a long wait for a shipment while the wholesaler waits for new products, which may reflect badly on the retailer. A good wholesaler will keep retailers updated, but it is the business owner's job to be aware of the quantities that the wholesaler has available.
