You often underestimate how much you can write off, for example your office in your house or most type of mailing - even some personal stuff

If you can avoid it I would try to manage your salary if you own the business. Just pay you a salary when you need it and if you dont invest it back in the business.

I agree it is so hard to keep up with all the regulations having a good accountant is the most important investment you can make in the business.

The IRS has some good resources Small Business and Self-Employed One-Stop Resource but I think the most important thing you can do is save receipts and properly account for everything. Many people wait until the last minute to try to think of all the things they can write off and find out they forgot a lot of things that could of been written off.

Tax Planning is not that difficult task once you have sorted out every facts needed, in detail. Take a business trip with your family you wont save on taxes but you will get the benefit of the deduction - just make sure you only charge what is applicable to you room, part of meal etc
