Re: Small business grants and private foundations

Private foundations are certainly one way to go but some of them take more of an interest in your business than you would want I would consider a SBA loan first - the only thing your government is interested is your taxes

Re: Small business grants and private foundations

When I was looking for information on grants for small business, I checked out The Most Up-to-Date Grant Information

You can get small business grant listings when you subscribe to their newsletter which is free. It was very helpful. You might want to look into that.

Re: Small business grants and private foundations

Hi Courier,
Nice resource for funding and agree with you that they are taking more interest in our business then we want. Let me know one more thing. What are the commonly used repaying terms they offer or they just become our business partner for ever and take out some % of profits annually?
Thanks,
Andy

Re: Small business grants and private foundations

I gave you a detailed explanation and resources about how grants work and where you may be able to find them in your other question.

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center's Foundation Grants for Individuals Online http://gtionline.fdncenter.org . It's a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don't have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

I suggest you read the following books to get ideas of how to finance your business:

Re: Small business grants and private foundations

It's important to understand that grants are not normally offered to for-profit start ups. If you do find a grant for a start up it's very nominal (say under $2000) and the competition is fierce.

Many entrepreneurs (Preneuraholics as I like to call us) waste a lot of time in search of the elusive grant. Funding a new business is difficult. Qualifying for a business loan is difficult. Investors and angels? Not usually interested in the little start up.

This is why I have developed a new funding option for the "little guy". It is designed for those that have a great idea but can't find traditional funding.
Preneuraholics.com will launch in a few weeks. Stay tuned...

Re: Small business grants and private foundations

It is good to get such good info. Thankfully there are agencies other than the government which give grants and loans.

Re: Small business grants and private foundations

Quoting two investment experts on msnbc recently discussing grants for small business:

Ken Yancey, CEO of SCORE "I've been doing this for 16 yrs and never met anyone that got a grant."

Phil Town, bestselling investing author, "...must be 20-30 websites about U.S. grants. I think they're all scams."

This is what I've been advising entrepreneurs for years...there are no grants for small biz start ups or for for-profit small businesses. Stop chasing those non existent grants.

This is also why I created an alternative funding source. After several years advising folks how to start their own small business I discovered that the biggest hurdle was funding. Most people just don't qualify for traditional funding. We need to help each other. We need to come together. Check out the blog below for more info.

Re: Small business grants and private foundations

Hello friends

he Federal Government and Private Grant Foundations issue billions of dollars in grant money to a variety of groups each year. Grants are awarded to individuals each and every day from all walks of life, with large and very small bank accounts, for an ever-increasing array of purposes.
Grant programs are not Loans. You decide how much you need. As long as the amount is lawful and you meet the Foundations and Government Agencies Requirements, the money is yours to keep and never needs to be repaid. This grant money is non-taxable and interest-free!
Grant programs don't require a credit checks, collateral, security deposits or co-signers, you can apply even if you have a declared bankruptcy or have bad credit. You as a tax payer and U.S. citizen are entitled to apply for this money.

Thanks for sharing us......

Re: Small business grants and private foundations

Nealy, can you tell us where to find these Private Grant Foundations? Can you point us tot he federal goverenment agency that hands out these grants? Do you know of anyone that has actually received one of these grants?

Yes, there are grants out there but not for small buisness start ups that are for-profit. If the CEO of SCORE says he's never known anyone that received a grant, I'd tend to believe him rather than someone that keeps perpetuating the idea that there is free money to be had just for the asking.
