CAREER PROS: Don’t Diminish Limited Experience

Every jobseeker has a different background. Those whose experience has been with only one company may encounter difficulties in their job search if the correct responses are not given in the interview.

The stigma attached to one-company jobseekers is that they have limited experience. The individual can only offer the background that his or her sole employer provided. Another concern employers may have is that he or she will be unable to adapt quickly to the new work situation.

Your goal is to allay any fears or concerns a prospective employer may have. Going into any interview, assume the interviewer may have a negative perception of your one-company background. That does not mean you should acknowledge or bring up any negatives or say you realize the interviewer may have concerns about your background.

What it does mean is that you should be prepared to show you are the right person for the job. To be successful, you need to be able to answer interview questions effectively, to the prospective employer’s satisfaction. You must stress that you are the most qualified person for the job and that you will make an immediate and positive impact, enhancing the company’s competitive edge.

One of the best ways to convince a prospective employer of that is to focus on your achievements. Cite examples from your previous job that highlight your most significant accomplishments. Think of examples that show you are a team player. Employers like to hire likeable people, those who will get along easily with others. They are not interested in hiring people who are going to disrupt the flow of business, no matter how competent the individuals may be.
